NEW YORK – Wook + Flavio Gallery is pleased to announced an upcoming exhibition of works by acclaimed Danielle Coenen.
Within each of these faces there is a pattern of creation and destruction, revealing and concealing. she is drawn to the face because of its inherent psychological weight. Through the way that she paints, the expression she gives the subject, features she highlights or conceals, a persona emerges from a process that reflects her own inner experience. They are a base for her to visually and conceptually illustrate dualities. Visually she harmonizes realism and abstraction, combining characteristics of paint and mark making. Conceptually, painting is where she enacts what is relevant in her own life - accepting destruction as a catalyst for creation, allowing attachments and relinquishing them, and balancing intellectualism with spontaneous playfulness.
Danielle Coenen is a Boston based painter who creates faces characterized by saturated palettes and merging of figurative with abstract. She received a BFA from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, trained in both figure painting and sculpture. Hide and Seek will be her second solo show, other notable including multiple juried exhibitions in Boston and an invitational at the Attleboro Arts Museum in 2016.
